Service upgrade

Upgrades

Old PHP, an out-of-date CMS or an ageing framework, brought safely up to date without breaking what already works.

Sound familiar?

  • Your hosting company is warning that your PHP version is no longer supported.
  • Your CMS keeps asking for updates you're nervous about installing.
  • Your site runs on a version of WordPress, Drupal, Craft CMS or Laravel that no longer gets security fixes.
  • Plugins and libraries have stopped being updated, and adding new features has become impossible.

Why it matters

Out-of-date software stops getting security fixes, and hosting companies eventually stop supporting old PHP versions altogether. The longer it's left, the bigger, riskier and more expensive each upgrade becomes. Doing it in planned steps keeps it manageable.

What I upgrade

  • PHP, from old 5.x and 7.x versions up to PHP 8, fixing the code that newer versions reject.
  • Craft CMS, including older Craft sites moving to Craft 5.
  • Laravel, step by step through the major versions.
  • WordPress and Drupal, including themes and plugins that have fallen behind.
  • Frameworks like Yii and CodeIgniter, upgraded or, where it makes more sense, migrated.
  • Classic ASP, .NET, Ruby and virtually any other framework brought up to date in the latest stable version of PHP.

Safe, tested and reversible

Every upgrade is done on a copy of your site first. I test the things that matter to you, such as forms, payments, logins and imports, before anything goes live, and keep a full backup so we can roll back if we need to.

Pricing

After a short review of your site, I'll give you a fixed quote for the upgrade, and tell you honestly if a migration or rebuild would be better value.

How it works

  1. Review

A look at what you're running, what's out of date and what depends on what.

  2. Plan

The upgrade path, the risks and a fixed quote.

  3. Upgrade on a copy

The work is done on a copy of your site, never on the live one.

  4. Test with you

I test the important journeys, then you check it too.

  5. Go live

A planned switchover at a quiet time, with a backup ready.

Questions

Will my site look different afterwards?

Usually not. An upgrade changes what's under the bonnet; the design and content stay the same unless you want changes.

Will there be downtime?

The work happens on a copy, so the switchover itself is normally quick. I'll plan it for a quiet time for your business.

Should I upgrade or rebuild?

It depends on the site. After the review I'll give you an honest view: sometimes an upgrade is the best value, and sometimes a rebuild or migration saves money in the long run.

How often should a site be updated?

Small updates as they come out, and a check at least once a year for bigger version changes.
