Website Rescue

Broken, hacked, slow or abandoned website? I find out what's really wrong, fix it properly and make sure it doesn't happen again.

Sound familiar?

  • Your site has been hacked, or Google is warning visitors away from it.
  • It's slow, shows errors or stopped working after an update.
  • The developer who built it has disappeared, and nobody else will touch it.
  • You can't log in, or can't change anything without something else breaking.
  • Your hosting company says the site is out of date or using too many resources.

What I do

First, I get you back online, or keep you online, as quickly and safely as possible. Then I find out what actually went wrong, rather than patching over the symptoms. I've spent 25 years working on PHP sites of every kind (WordPress, Drupal, Craft CMS, Laravel, CodeIgniter, Yii and plenty of bespoke systems), so it's rare that I see something completely new.

  • Hacked sites cleaned up, with the hole the attackers used closed, passwords and keys changed, and help getting Google's warnings removed.
  • Broken sites diagnosed and fixed, whether it's a failed update, a server move gone wrong or a plugin conflict.
  • Slow sites checked to find the real bottleneck, from database queries to oversized images and underpowered hosting.
  • Abandoned sites documented and brought under control, so you're never reliant on one person again.

Fixed properly, not just patched

Once the site is working, you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong, what I fixed and what I'd recommend next. That might be nothing at all, or it might be an upgrade or migration to put the site on a footing that lasts.

Pricing

Urgent problems come first. Before I start, I'll tell you what I can see and roughly what it will take, and I'll keep you updated as I go, so there are no surprises.

How it works

  1. Get in touch

Tell me what's happening. If it's urgent, say so and I'll prioritise it.

  2. Stabilise

A full backup first, then whatever it takes to get the site back up, or stop things getting worse.

  3. Diagnose

Find the real cause, not just the symptom.

  4. Fix

Repair it properly, test it and check nothing else has been affected.

  5. Report and prevent

A plain-English summary of what happened and what will stop it happening again.

Questions

My site has been hacked. What should I do right now?

Get in touch as soon as you can, and change the passwords for your hosting, site admin and email. Don't delete anything yet: the files help show how the attackers got in.

Can you work on a site someone else built?

Yes. Most rescue work is on sites built by other developers, often with no documentation. Working out how someone else's code fits together is a big part of what I do.

What access will you need?

Ideally your hosting, domain and site admin logins. If you don't have them, I can help you get them back from your host or previous developer.

Will I lose any content?

I take a full backup before changing anything, and work on a copy wherever possible, so your content is protected.

Can you look after the site afterwards?

Yes. I can keep it updated and keep an eye on it, so the same problems don't come back.
