Code Audits & Refactoring

An independent code audit tells you where you stand; careful refactoring makes the code safe to change again.

Sound familiar?

  • Every small change takes days, and something else breaks.
  • Your developer has left, and the new one says it all needs rewriting.
  • You're buying, selling or investing in a business and need to know what the software is really like.
  • The site or app is slow and fragile, and nobody can say why.

Code audit

An independent, senior review of your codebase, written for the people who make decisions as well as for developers. I look at security, structure, performance, dependencies, hosting and how the code is deployed. Then I tell you plainly what's fine, what's risky and what to do about it, in order of priority.

Refactoring

Refactoring improves the code without changing what it does for your users. I work in small, tested steps: adding tests around the parts that matter, removing duplication, replacing out-of-date libraries and splitting tangled code into pieces that make sense. The business keeps running throughout, and each change makes the next one easier.

Rewrite or refactor?

A full rewrite is tempting, but it's often the most expensive and risky option. Most of the time, steady refactoring gets you to the same place with far less disruption. Where a rewrite really is the right call, the audit will say so.

Pricing

Audits are quoted at a fixed price based on the size of the codebase. Refactoring can be a fixed piece of work or ongoing time each month, whichever suits you.

How it works

  1. Access

Read-only access to the code and hosting. Nothing is changed during an audit.

  2. Audit

A thorough review of security, structure, performance and dependencies.

  3. Report

A plain-English report with a summary for decision-makers and detail for developers.

  4. Prioritise

We agree what matters most, based on risk and what the business needs next.

  5. Refactor

Small, tested improvements, delivered steadily while the business keeps running.

Questions

What do I get from an audit?

A written report in plain English, with a summary for decision-makers, detailed findings for developers and a prioritised list of recommendations.

Do you need access to the live site?

I need the code, ideally from version control, and read access to the hosting. I won't change anything during an audit.

Can you work alongside our developers?

Yes. I'm happy to review their work, pair with them on the trickier parts, or hand over cleanly when the work is done.

Which technologies do you audit?

PHP above all, including Laravel, Craft CMS, WordPress, Drupal, Yii and CodeIgniter, plus the JavaScript and MySQL that come with them.
